GREENSBORO, N.C. (June 20, 2008)--Goals from three different scorers carried the Carolina Dynamo to a 3-1 victory over the West Virginia Illusion Friday night at Macpherson Stadium. Greer Barnes volleyed home a Sydney Metheny corner in the 71st minute for the Illusion goal.
Katie Andreski opened scoring in the 13th minute, burying a Allie Sadow shot that rebounded off the crossbar.
The Illusion nearly equalized five minutes later when Megan Mischler’s shot off of an errant backpass sailed high and again in the 31st minute when a rocket from Marisa Kanela was denied by a fine diving save from Dynamo goalkeeper Lauren Brown.
One minute later, the Dynamo doubled their lead on a hard shot from Hailey Beam from just outside the 18-yard box.
Second-half sub Ashley Church pushed the cushion to three goals in the 58th minute on a tap-in from a Tessa Hall cross.
The Illusion found their legs in the final 20 minutes. Metheny won a corner on the left side and played a beautiful ball to the head of Barnes in the six-yard box. Her initial header was blocked, but the rebound was not.
The Illusion kept the pressure on late, but shots from Kanela, Mischler, and Melissa Bigg either went wide or into Brown’s gloves.
Mischler had four shots to pace the Illusion attack; Barnes, Kanela, Bigg, and Metheny each had two.
The Illusion continue their Southern swing tomorrow night when they visit the Hampton Roads Piranhas. Kick-off is at 7 p.m.
