Illusion Drop Final Home Game to Piranhas

FAIRMONT, W.Va. (July 12, 2008)--The West Virginia Illusion's home finale was a Nigerian nightmare as Mercy Akide Udoh and Joy Nsubuga scored three times in the first half as the Hampton Roads Piranhas (5-6-1) completed their season sweep of the West Virginia Illusion (1-11-0) by a score of 4-0 in front of 70 fans at Duvall-Rosier Field in Fairmont Saturday.

The Piranhas scored in the third minute when Udoh cut back and fired past Illusion goalkeeper Andrea Kaminski from the right side. It was the eight time in twelve games that the Illusion conceded a goal in the first 15 minutes of a match.

Megan Mischler took the first two solid Illusion chances: in the 12th minute, she missed wide after a great run down the right side; in the 15th minute, her shot went just over the bar.

In the 28th minute, Marisa Kanela's corner kick was mishandled by Piranhas goalkeeper Victoria Johnson, but a defender blocked Ashley Rees' follow-up attempt.

Akide Udoh picked up her second goal of the match in the 33rd minute. After having an initial volley attempt blocked, she touched the ball around a defender and buried it from 15 yards out.

The Kanela-Rees combination resulted in another chance in the 37th minute, but Rees' header went wide.

Joy Nsubuga made it 3-0 in the 43rd minute.

Mischler had another good look in the 58th minute, taking a feed from Melissa Bigg and moving in on the keeper one-on-one, but she shot it right at Jonson.

The Piranhas pushed the cushion to 4-0 in the 66th minute when Jamie Clark's corner kick was headed home by Kim McMullen.

The Illusion close out their season next weekend with a two-game road trip to Charlotte and Atlanta.
